Is Franklin REALLY the Gem Capital of the World?
Click here for article in the Franklin EZ-Guide During the summer months rockhounds and tourists converge on the tiny town of Franklin, North Carolina to attend gem shows, do some fluming at the local gem mines, and simply spend their vacations in this stunningly beautiful area at the southern foothills of the great Smoky Mountains. Each summer, for one week in May and another week in July three great gem and mineral shows--the Macon County Gemboree, the Highlands Road Gem Show, and the Gem & Lapidary Wholesalers (G&LW) Gem Show -- showcase the gems, mineral specimens, and jewelry of more than a 200 dealers and vendors from all over the world. But year-round, vacationers and outdoors lovers flood the area to take in the natural beauty of the never ending hills, rivers, forests, cascading waterfalls, and colorful autumn sceneries. There is plenty to do for everyone who comes to Franklin and Macon County, but rockhounds who come to this area know that it is one of the only places in the world where it is not rare on a casual hike in the hills--if you know what you're looking for--to return home with a pocketful of precious stones, even rubies, sapphires and garnets! This is what makes Franklin, truly, the Gem Capital of the World. For more information please contact:
